Sofia Colares Alves has been the Head of the Representation of the European Commission in Portugal since July 2016.
Experienced lawyer, she has been working in the European Commission since 2003 in the field of competition policy. She began her duties at the Commission in the Transport unit of the DG Concorrência,, after having served as a referendum in the Chamber of Judge Moura Ramos before the Court of First Instance of the European Communities in Luxembourg.
After seven years in the DG Concorrência, she became a member of the office of former Vice-President of the Commission, Joaquín Almunia (from 2010 to 2013), and advised on cartels, antitrust policy and merger control in Pharmaceuticals, transport, agriculture and food, and manufacturing industry. She was subsequently appointed Head of Unit to the DG Concorrência and was responsible for coordinating the work of national competition authorities in implementing EU antitrust law (from 2013 to 2015).
In May 2015 she was assigned to the Portuguese Competition Authority, in Lisbon, as head of the cabinet responsible for providing advice to the Council in all areas covered by the AdC.
Having started her career as an assistant in the law department of the College of Europe, she then acquired a year of experience in the private sector at the service of the Belgian law firm Vermulst & Waer Advocaten.
She obtained her law degree from the University of Lisbon and a master's degree in European legal studies at the College of Europe in Bruges.
