At the beginning of his long career, Arq. José Carlos Loureiro designed and built one of the most remarkable architectural and engineering works of our city, that is, a hall for the 1952 World Hockey Championship, that would replace the Palácio de Cristal (Crystal Palace).
This vault, which has a diameter of more than 92 metres and 31,5 metres in height, besides being a remarkable architectural work with a daring structure, calculated by the structure engineers António Soares and Jorge Delgado, is outstanding in the way it combines both the natural lighting provided by the rooflights and the artificial one drawn up by the electrical engineer Botelho de Sousa. After more than 60 years, this magnificent work urgently requires rehabilitation repairs, namely the reinforcement of the thin thickness of the spherical calotte and the overhaul and repair of the translucent concrete on the top of the vault. During a presentation that will take place in the building itself, Arq. José Carlos Loureiro will tell the story of this project since the beginning of his career as an architect and Eng. Hugo Marques from GEG will show the inspection operations carried out to prove the urgent need of maintenance works. The presentation will be followed by a visit to the exterior of the roof.
